According to the National Family Health Survey 2015-16 (NFHS-4) 'n 2019-21 (NFHS-5) *
i) Sex ratio at birth for children born in the last five years (females per 1000 males)
2015-16 (NFHS-4) / 2019-21 (NFHS-5) / % diff avg.
Avg - 919 / Urban - 924 / Rural - 931 /Avg- 929 / + 1.088
ii) Sex ratio of the total population (females for 1000 males)
2015-16 (NFHS-4) / 2019-21 (NFHS-5) / % diff avg.
Avg - 991 / Urban - 985 Rural -1037 / Avg-1020 / +2.926
Inferences
i) The positive though marginal difference in the averages on both counts may be attributable to Prime Minister Modi's Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Abhiyan.
ii) Contrary to the public misconception, the rural population is seemingly more female friendly than the urbanites.
iii) However, the single child and two children family control norm, which is more prevalent in the urban areas, could be intervening with law of averages.
So, it would be an idea to gather the male female data in
the single child and two children family in the next National Family Health Survey.
iv) Likewise, in the future National Family Health Surveys , it would be an idea to gather the sex ratio of the population in the marriageable age group of 18 - 30 so as to ascertain the adverse affects, if any, of the higher proportion of female male ratio.
